The Comics Journal Library Vol. 1 Jack Kirby Interviews (2002)
Like any popular medium, comic books in the 20th century were marked by trends. Unlike music or film or television, comics can point to a small handful of men who, through a combination of imagination and artistry, dictated those trends. Chief among the idea men was Jack "King" Kirby. Kirby's dynamic art and limitless imagination were responsible for much of what made comics great from the 1940s through the '70s. Dark Horse Presents # 103 (October 1995)
Jack Kirby is the undeniable King of Comics. He created most of the heroes we all grew up with. But superheroes weren't his exclusive subject matter -- he also drew westerns, crime stories, romance comics . . . and Bible plates. In the 1970s, Kirby illustrated his favorite scenes from the Old Testament; not comic stories, but illustrative plates. "It was the best work of his life," says Roz Kirby. "The artwork he was most proud of." For a look at the greatest work of... mehr >

Need more? How 'bout: The Church of the SubGenius, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers in "The Idiots Abroad," graphic design for director Alex Cox, Anarchy Comics, RE/SEARCH, The New Yorker, v... mehr >
High Adventure # 1 (1973)
Kitchen Sink Press in the early '70s was associated almost entirely with underground comix, implying high levels of raunch, irreverence and drugs. Nice wraparound cover by Bob Kline. Stories include "Nimbus" by Mark Evanier and Kline; "Lord Sabre" by Evanier, Steve Leialoha and Jo... mehr >
